Classroom to Government Digital Service - An insight into my opportunity in GDS

Updated: Jul 10, 2019

Two weeks before our day of induction, our school organised a presentation with the GDS School Outreach Lead, Catherine Ahorituwere @AhoriDigi. At the time, I never knew what GDS was, is, or their importance. All I knew was that they are government workers, but I didn’t know they were more than that. A handful of us were selected to participate in a wonderful opportunity to get an insight into the office in Government Digital Service, as well as learn about the possibilities for my future career. The process of selection was rigorous. We were selected by our attendance, what we have achieved, our interest in Computer Science and IT and our willingness to volunteer for our school - all for a once in a lifetime experience. I’d never thought that a school like us would have ties to a workplace like this, and I was honoured to be a part of the programme.

When I walked into the office for the first time, I was greeted with a familiar face – Catherine. Even though we have not been in the office for an hour, I immediately felt like I belong here. Observing around was a direct contrast to what I expected. Since everyone in the office was a civil worker, you are not seen for your political views. There is a complete dissociation with politics – your views stay behind the door. Along with this, there was a diverse range of people from many different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, abilities and disabilities and neuro-diversities.

Learning about the different opportunities here is great. Being a pilot year, I knew from the instance I walked in that this would be a recurring event. It’s too good to not pass the baton to younger people for them to take the leap. Along with this, there are other instances for opportunities like the Civil Service Fast Stream and Summer Internship, which I plan to take while I’m in university. This one experience has also taught me to take any opportunity handed to me, and fight for any opportunity to be given to me. My work experience inspired me to take more leaps and cross the boundaries.

Throughout my time here, everything I learnt and experienced was gold dust. I have learnt so much in a week. Experience is greater than any lesson taught, and an experience like this is applicable to anyone’s future. I was honoured to have been granted this chance. Catherine is a great advocate for social mobility, and all my greatest appraisals go to her. Her objectives to outsource to deprived areas are very heartfelt, especially coming from a minority where we seek for something like this. I resonate with her intentions and share in her passion.

I conclude by giving my greatest gratitude to everyone in GDS. They are more than just a service, as this week has proved as such. They are everything you could ever ask for from a student who is eager to learn – a resource, a mentor, an opportunity. I’m going to miss it here, and I hope to stay in contact with them as I grow.

For caregivers, starting a conversation about depression with an elderly parent can be difficult. Using the Geriatric Depression Scale together can be a gentle, non-confrontational way to open the door to discussing their emotional health.
